Planning a Barn or Outdoor Wedding? Consider the Weather.

Photography by Rachel Cooper.

When it’s October in Pittsburgh, Pa, the temperatures here can range from 50 or 60 degrees during the day and into the freezing temperatures by nightfall. Blink and the weather will change- this is Pittsburgh! It is also a city where if you are planning an outdoor event you must factor in the weather.

We always forewarn our clients that if they choose to have an outdoor event in April (don’t even consider it), May, September or October, they must either have a back up plan or reserve patio heaters from a local rental company. These can be placed around your pavilion or outdoor area.

In our experience, even barn weddings can be quite chilly in early spring or fall. Guests will frequently dress in clothing that is not warm enough or appropriate for an outdoor wedding. We were witness to short dresses and sandals at a barn wedding last fall where temperatures hovered in the 60’s with wind and rain. Part of the barn was wide open and yes, it was chilly.

What’s the best way to deal with these issues? Here’s a checklist if you’re absolutely set on a May, September or October wedding.

  1. Is your venue/barn heated? Many barns are now and we love this!!
  2. Does your pavilion or tent have sidewalls that can be rolled down in case of rain?
  3. Have you reserved patio heaters from your rental company?
  4. Consider baskets of rolled up lap blankets placed around the barn for guests.
  5. Have an insert in your invitation that reminds guests to dress appropriately for the weather.
  6. Have a back up plan if you are at an outdoor pavilion.

If you have an outdoor wedding and the weather turns chilly, guests will leave after dinner. We’ve seen it and it’s a sad sight, especially if you have a great band or want to dance until 10pm. Though we all want to expect perfect weather for your wedding day, it is less stressful to have a plan so everyone is comfortable.
